Ken Luttman on working as a massage therapist in the US

Ken Luttman runs a wellness studio in New York with a team of Physio Therapists, Personal Trainers and other health professionals.

Ken Luttman has worked nearly 20 years as a Licensed Massage Therapist in the US. Swedish massage is very popular in NY and the US as a whole.  Swedish massage is offered as a service by itself and also utilized as a base to blend other modalities within a session.

Ken, what are your thoughts on the future of the massage and wellness industry?

I think that there is strong support for this industry because of the various effective solutions it offers to a society that creates so many self inflicted ailments. That is to say that in the US people seem to find their validation through how productive they are at work, and how much they earn. This is in strong contrast to Europe where one’s validation is rooted in family, traditions, and various other organic activities.

How big is the massage and wellness industry in the United States today?

Below are some statistics that I gathered from the AMTA website. AMTA- American Massage Therapy Association- is the most comprehensive resource for massage therapists here offering everything from insurance, to representation in municipalities where our industry is under attack.
– Research estimates that massage therapy was a $12.1 billion industry in the country in 2015.
– By comparison in 2005, massage therapy was projected to be a $6 to $11 billion a year industry.
– It is estimated that there are 300,000 to 350,000 massage therapists and massage school students in the United States.
– From 2011 to 2015, revenue from alternative health care providers, which includes massage therapists, increased by 14 percent, and employment increased 19 percent. Revenue growth is projected to continue at an average rate of 3.6 percent per year through 2020.
– Between July 2014 and July 2015, roughly 39.1 million adult Americans (18 percent) had a massage at least once.
